Among the legions of Warhammer 40K space marines, there are few Chapters more feared than the Dark Angels. Considered to be one of the oldest, most secretive and most powerful of the Adeptus Astartes, they have fought in countless battles across the Imperium, earning a reputation for their fearsomeness and loyalty.
Yet even among the hallowed ranks of the Dark Angels, there are those warriors who stand above their brothers-in-arms. These legendary soliders are known as the Deathwing, elite veteran Space Marines clad in Terminator armor and wielding some of their Chapter’s most fearsome and sacred weapons.
Now, these iconic warriors are once again called to battle in the form of a new Warhammer 40K Deathwing Assault Box Set that will soon be available for pre-order from Games Workshop. Below, we break out all the details.
What’s included in the new Deathwing Assault box set?
While this isn’t the first time we’ve seen some of these Warhammer 40K miniatures before, there are a few new items that are included. The box set contains:
- 1 model of Grand Master Belial
- 10 Terminator models
- 5 Deathwing Knight models
- A new 96-page Codex Supplement: Dark Angels
- 20 datasheet cards (covering all units in the Codex)
- 2 transfer sheets (with 200 transfers per sheet)
Notably, the Grand Master Belial model is completely new and hasn’t appeared before. The Terminators and Deathwing Knights, however are based on existing minis, although they do come with two new Dark Angels upgrade frames.
What are the Deathwing Assault Unit Stats?
Games Workshop has recently provided a Deathwing Terminator player’s guide which is a great resource to accompany the new Deathwing Assault box set.
First, it’s important to remember that despite their elite nature, the primary Deathwings are still Terminators. That means a toughness of 5, a 2+ save, 4++ invulnerable save and 3 wounds. Additionally, they have the Deep Strike Ability and Teleport Homers, the latter of which allows them to use the Rapid Ingress ability to drop into battle without wasting any Command Points.
The Deathwing Knights included in the box set are even more powerful, with 4 wounds and the Inner Circle ability that takes one damage off the top of any damage this unit takes. That means in reality they can take a whopping 5 wounds before they’re dropped.
The new Grand Master Belial model also packs a serious punch, as he can give a whole unit Precision on Critical Hits so you can pick off enemy units from a distance.
What is the Points Breakout for the Deathwing Assault Box?
Games Workshop recently broke out the points for the Dark Angels, so for the Deathwing Assault box set you’d be looking at the following point allocation:
- 85 points for Belial
- 410 points for 10 Terminators
- 290 points for Deathwing Knights
This gives a grand total of 785 points – although there is some room to work with here as you can also purchase 5 Terminators for 205 points and potentially roll out some upgrades or grab some additional units. In either case, it’s a great base to work with if you’re looking to start your very first Deathwing army.
Who are the Deathwings?
The Deathwing is an elite force that belongs to the Dark Angels, one of the oldest and most revered Space Marine Chapters who were founded by the Primarch Lion El’Jonson (the protagonist in the new Black Library novel The Lion: Son of the Forest).
Deathwing units are distinguished by their striking bone-white armor, which is a stark contrast to the green power armor normally worn by Dark Angels. Most Deathwing units consist of Terminators, but they are also supported by Deathwing Knights, skilled melee warriors who are armed with a Mace of Absolution and a Storm Shield, both of which are priceless heirlooms from the time of the Great Crusade in the late 30th Millennium.
The primary role of the Deathwing is to serve as the Dark Angel’s first line of defence against the most dangerous threats in battle. They are also entrusted with the Chapter’s darkest secrets, including the hunt for The Fallen, former Dark Angels who betrayed their oath during the Horus Heresy.
When is the Deathwing Assault Box Set Available?
This box set will be available for pre-order on January 20th, 2024, with a street date of February 3rd, 2024. It’s not clear, however, how long it will take before customers receive their copy (manufacturing issues have lead to Games workshop planning for a new Warhammer Factory and retooling their IT infrastructure in the wake of ecommerce slowdowns on their website).
Games Workshop has confirmed on Twitter that this is a limited release, so once the box set are gone they will not likely be available anytime again in the future. The product will, however, be available online and in-store both from GW and third-party retailers.
How much is the new Deathwing Assault Box Set?
While the exact price has not yet been confirmed, according to most sources the Deathwing Assault Box Set will likely have an MSRP of around $210 USD (£135.00) if you order it directly from GW.
Third-party retailers, however, typically knock 15 to 20% off GW’s standard price, so you can likely expect to pay less if you are able to get your hands on it from your local hobby or game store.
Final Thoughts
Dark Angels fans are likely going to be keeping a close eye on this new Deathwing Assault box set, as it offers a rare opportunity to expand on this unique chapter. The limited nature of the set is also likely to make it a hot commodity. You can learn more about the new box set on the Games Workshop website.
