Warhammer 40K Artist John Blanche Gets New Biography
We take a closer look at the new book which celebrates Warhammer 40K artist John Blanche, creator of the legendary “Blanchitsu” art style.
For better or for worse, the Warhammer 40K App for 10th edition has become a major part of the game and maintains a significant user base, despite some serious complaints among fans.
One of the biggest criticism is that to actually build out multiple army lists using the Battle Forge system requires a paid subscription to Warhammer+, limiting the functionality of the app and potentially turning off new players.
And while Games Workshop has yet to remove this pay wall, they have made some recent updates to the app to address a number of additional user concerns. Below we break out all the details.
What is the Warhammer 40K App?
The latest Warhammer 40K App was released in June 2023 to coincide with the publication of the 10th edition of the game and the Leviathan box set. Currently, it includes both a Free version and Paid version, the latter of which requires a subscription to the Warhammer+ service for $5.99 USD per month or $59.99 USD if you pay annually.
The Free version (which can be accessed without signing up to any account) includes the 10th edition Core Rules and Key Documents, such as the most recent Balance Dataslate. It then further provides information for each Warhammer 40K faction (i.e. Adepta Sororitas, Drukhari, Necrons, Orks, etc.). Under each Faction, users have access to current Data sheets, Army Rules, Detachments, Enhancements, Strategems and Secondary Objectives (including a full break out for the existing 10th edition Combat Patrols).
The Paid version includes everything that’s in the Free version as well as access to “Battle Forge,” the official Warhammer 40K list building tool (notably, users of the Free version are able to access Battle Forge, but can access only one Roster at a time).
What changes have been made to the Warhammer 40K app?
Sadly, Games Workshop has not rescinded their Warhammer+ policy for access to Battle Forge, but they have unveiled two new features, both of which are available to Free and Paid users on the app.
Command Bunker: This is an in-game companion that now includes all Datasheets, Army rules, Detachment rules and Enhancements on a single screen, making it easier to find specific in-game elements.
Favourites: This an expansion to the existing Reference section and includes a new tab labelled “Favourites” where you can store selected Datasheets, Army rules, Detachment rules and Enhancements for quick reference.
Final Thoughts
While the biggest issue with the Warhammer 40K app has yet to be acknowledged (namely that you have to pay to use its most valuable feature), it is encouraging that Games Workshop is at least attempting to improve some aspects of the app – even if they are relatively minor updates.
If you’re a new user, you can download the Warhammer 40K app now from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, and if you’re an existing user if you update the app on your iOS or Android device the two new features should be available.
