In September 2022, the popular miniatures paint brand Army Painter released a surprisingly candid YouTube video entitled “We Hear You.” In the video, the company acknowledged many of the criticisms of their established Warpaints line, including longstanding issues around the consistency and performance of their products. In the video, they promised to address these concerns with new paints that would be released in the near future.
Fast forward over a year later, and the company has seemingly kept their word, with a new line of products known as the Warpaints Fanatic line.
So do these new paints fix some of the big issues Warhammer 40K fans have had with Army Painter? Below we break out all the details.
What is the new Warpaints Fanatic line?
The Warpaints Fanatic line is the first time in almost 15-years that Army Painter has revamped their primary product line. These new miniature paints have made a number of significant technical enhancements, including adding 300-700% more pigment, using a new improved stabilizer and featuring a higher-quality resin base – all of which will (in theory) allow for more control and coverage.
The new line will feature 216 different paints (broken out into 162 acrylics, 18 metallics, 18 washes and 18 effects). And while you can purchase them individually in the now standard dropper bottle format, you can also pick them up in the following four box sets (which are designed to replace Army Painter’s current Warpaints sets):
- Mega Set: This includes 50 paints, a build-it yourself paint station to hold your dropper bottles and brushes and a free sable brush.
- Complete Set: This includes all 216 paints, the paint station and four extra brushes (the regiment brush, the insane detail brush, a small dry brush and a moderate dry brush).
- Starter Set: This is designed to replace the existing Warpaints Starter Set and includes 11 paints, as well as brush-on primer, a starter brush and a free miniature.
- Most Wanted Set: This set will feature more niche and unusual colors, including some metallics and hues like Disgusting Slime and Cultist Purple. Like the starter set, the Most Wanted Set will also include a free miniature.
Are the new Fanatic paints any good?
While the new Warpaint Fanatic line isn’t yet available to the general public, early reviews from online influencers and reviewers have been incredibly positive. Uncle Atom of the popular Tabletop Minions YouTube channel, recently reviewed the Complete box and heaped a ton of praise on it, calling out the new paint’s creamy texture, ease of application and impressive coverage.
Similarly, the YouTube miniatures channel OnTableTop had a very positive reception, noting that the paints performed extremely well with just single layer of coverage and were particularly impressive when it comes to more difficult colors like reds and yellows.
When is the Warpaints Fanatics set coming out?
The new Warpaints Fanatics Mega Set and Complete Set will be available for global pre-order on January 15th, 2024. The Starter Set and Most Wanted sets, however, will only be available for pre-order sometime in February 2024.
It’s important to note that this does apply primarily to online purchases, so it’s possible that your local game store or hobby retailer might not get them in until a few months after the initial release.
How much are the new Warpaints Fanatics?
You’ll be able to purchase individual dropper bottles of the new Fanatic paints for $4.25 USD (although prices may vary if you’re purchasing form a local game store).
Of course, as with the previous Army Painter products, it pays to buy the box sets. The Mega Set will retail for $199 USD and the Complete set is going for $759 USD. The prices for the Starter Set and Most Wanted Set have not yet been revealed.
Final Thoughts
It’s great to see that Army Painter is staying true to their word and creating a new line of products that addresses previous concerns and offers up some surprising technical improvements.
We’ll be keeping a close eye on these products as they get closer to launch, and will have a more detailed review at that time.
In the meantime, below is a video from Army Painter which offers a bit more information on what to expect from the new Fanatic line.
