For millions of Warhammer 40K fans around the world, the success and growing lore of the grimdark universe is due in large part to a key institution: the Black Library.
The popular publishing imprint of Games Workshop has released hundreds of novels, short stories and audio books over the decades, with new titles continuing to come out on a monthly basis.
To commemorate this growing body of work, each year Games Workshop hosts what it refers to as the Black Library Celebration. This annual event is chance for readers and fans to explore the best of the literary side of the Warhammer 40K universe and to get access to exclusive new products and swag.
So just what can we expect to see with the 2024 Black Library celebration? Below we break out all the details.
What is the Black Library Celebration?
Game Workshop’s Black Library Celebration is an annual event honoring the lore and stories of Warhammer 40K and Warhammer Age of Sigmar. The event typically takes place over a week and features the release of new Black Library titles, exclusive collector’s editions and special merchandise which is made available at local Warhammer stores.
Authors and artists also usually contribute to the event, with exclusive signings and panels. Additionally, Games Workshop will often release behind-the-scenes looks at new Warhammer 40K and Age of Sigmar books and products.
When is Black Library Celebration 2024?
Black Library Celebration 2024 will be taking place from February 5th to 9th, with events planned around the world. Additional tie-in events may also occur throughout the month depending on where you live.
It’s also important to note that while there are online activities planned, much of the celebration will be focused on local Games Workshop stores, so contacting your nearest Warhammer Store is the best way to find out when and where specific festivities will be taking place in your area.
What’s Planned for the 2024 Black Library Celebration?
According to Games Workshop, there are a number of new products and initiatives planned to commemorate the 2024 Black Library Celebration, including:
- New Special Edition Ork Book & Mini: Black Library readers will be able to get their hands on a new bright green Special Edition of Da Big Dakka, an upcoming novel by author Mike Brooks, which chronicles the further adventures of Ufthak Blackhawk. Fans of the Bad Moon Boss will also be able to access on a new miniature which features the character, along with his trusty squib sidekick Princess.
- New Mega Edition Morvenn Vahl Book: Black Library readers will also be able to snag a new special edition of the upcoming novel Morvenn Vahl: Spear of Faith by author Jude Reid. The book is the first to star Morvenn Vahl, the legendary High Lord of Terra and an Abbess Sanctorum of the Sisters of Battle. The Mega Edition includes its own presentation box and a bonus 54-page collection entitled The Book of Saints.
- Reads Choice Winner Republished: Each year, Games Workshop opens up its Reader’s Choice Awards, with fans selecting older novels to be republished in new paperback editions as part of the Black Library Celebration. For 2024, the winners are the Warhammer 40K novel Lord of the Night by Simon Spurrier (which was originally published in 2005) and the Warhammer Fantasy novel Riders of the Dead by Dan Abnett (which was originally published in 2003).
- New Digital Short Story: A new Warhammer digital short story (also referred to as an “eShort” by Games Workshop) will also be released during the event (although details on the author and subject matter have not yet been released).
Games Workshop has also indicated that additional products and tie-ins will be announced closer to the official Black Library Celebration dates.
