Fans of the Ruinous Powers of the Warp rejoice. Chaos Space Marines are returning to Warhammer 40K 10th edition in a big way, with several major new products coming out from Games Workshop in the coming weeks. This includes an updated Chaos Space Marines Codex along with a new Combat Patrol and several new Chaos Lord models.
In addition, GW has also announced not one, but two new Chaos Space Marine Battleforce box sets, which will be released in May 2024.
So just what can fans of the Dark Gods expect to see from these new collections? Below, we dig our claws into all the gory details.
What’s included in the New Chaos Space Marine Battleforce Sets?
As part of the 2024 Chaos Space Marines update, there are two new Battleforces available: “The Veterans of the Long War” (which is more of a standard Chaos Space Marine infantry assault force) and “The Dread Talons” (which lean heavily into jump packs for a more mobile style of play). Below are details on each set.
The Veterans of the Long War Battleforce
This particular Battleforce includes 31 individual models, as follows:
- 1x Chaos Lord
- 5x Chosen
- 10x Legionaries
- 10x Chaos Terminators
- 5x Possessed
Notably, all of these units have been previously released, with the exception of the standalone Chaos Lord, which is a brand new model.
The Dread Talons Battleforce
This particular Battleforce includes 34 individual models, as follows:
- Chaos Lord with Jump Pack
- x10 Raptors
- x1 Daemon Prince
- x10 Cultists
- 8x Accursed Cultists
- 5x Dark Commune units
Like Veterans of the Long Wa, all of the models in the Dread Talons Battleforce units have been previously released, with the exception of the standalone Chaos Lord with Jump Pack, which is an all-new design.
What are the datasheets and point values of the New Battleforces?
The complete datasheets for the two new Battleforces will first be made available in the upcoming Chaos Space Marines Codex for 10th edition, but stats for most of the units can be found in Games Workshop’s free Chaos Space Marines Index.
According to the latest version of the Munitorum Field Manual (which breaks out the current point value for our Warhammer 40K 10th edition units), the breakout is as follows:
The Veterans of the Long War Point Value
- 1x Chaos Lord (95 points)
- 5x Chosen (130 points)
- 10x Legionaries (180 points)
- 10x Chaos Terminators (390 points)
- 5x Possessed (140 points)
So all told, you’re looking at around 935 points for the Veterans of the Long War Battleforce, although this number may change based on your individual builds.
The Dread Talons Point Value
- Chaos Lord with Jump Pack (Unknown – although a Chaos Lord in Terminator Armour comes in at 95 points, so this model may have a similar value)
- x10 Raptors (180 points)
- x1 Daemon Prince (200 points)
- x10 Cultists (55 points)
- 8x Accursed Cultists (105 points)
- 5x Dark Commune units (65 points)
So all told, you’re looking at around 700 points for the Dread Talons, but this number may change based on your specific configuration, and the value of the Chaos Lord with Jump Pack remains unknown until the Codex release.
When Are The New Chaos Space Marine Battleforces Coming Out?
Currently, Games Workshop has not confirmed when the two new Chaos Space Marines Battleforces will be coming out. It will, however, likely be in May 2024 to coincide with the launch of the the upcoming 10th edition Chaos Space Marines Codex.
The street date may be different if you purchase it from your local game store or other online retailer, so be sure to check if you do end up pulling the trigger on either or both of these sets.
How much Are the new Chaos Space Marine Battleforces?
While Games Workshop has not yet confirmed pricing, each Battleforce will likely retail for $210 USD if you purchase it directly from the Games Workshop website. This is comparable to what we’ve seen past Battleforces retail for, such as the recently released 2024 Ork Battleforce and the Adeptus Custodes Battleforce.
If you were to purchase the models separately you’d likely be looking at around $300-$350 USD, so the savings here is considerable. Of course, as always, prices may vary if you buy the model from your local game store or from Amazon (where discounts and sales may allow you to pick him up for a bit cheaper, with most third-party retailers offering at least 10-15% discounts).
What previous Adeptus Custodes Battleforce Sets are available?
In 2023 Games Workshop released an Space Marines Battleforce known as the “Balefleet Battleforce,” which was part of the Arks of Omen narrative camapigns available for Warhammer 40K 9th edition. This box set (which has since been sold out and discontinued by GW) includes 17 models, inclluding:
- 1x Daemon Prince.
- x1 Heldrake
- x10 Chaos Space Marine Terminators
- x5 Possessed

Final Thoughts
If you’re an existing Chaos Space Marines player or looking to build your first army, then the upcoming Battleforces offer a more affordable way to augment your forces. Having two forces to choose from – both of which have their own distinct playstyles- also offers a lot more flexibility, with the jump pack variants in particular, being very different from what we’ve seen with past Chaos Space Marine units.
We’ll be keeping a close eye on these new Battleforces in the coming months and will update this page with new information (particularly related to price and release dates) as it’s made available.
