White Dwarf Introduces New Insidious Infiltrators Tyranid Combat Patrol

The launch of Warhamer 40K 10th edition back in the summer of 2023 saw a heavy focus on the Tyranids, with the ravenous xenos swarming into the Leviathan Box set, slashing their way into the new Crusade: Tyrannic War book and scuttling into their very own codex.

Now, they’ve invaded the pages ofWhite Dwarf issue #497, which features details and data sheets for a brand new Tyranid Combat Patrol known as the Insidious Infiltrators.

So how does this new unit stand up against other existing Combat Patrols? Below, we devour all the details.

What is the new Insidious Infiltrators Tyranid Combat Patrol?

The new Insidious Infiltrators Tyranid Combat Patrol is designed for maximum speed and melee efficiency, closing the distance with enemy units and then tearing them to shreds with their razor-sharp talons.

The trade off, however, is that they’re much fewer in numbers and don’t pack nearly as much of a punch in terms of ranged attacks.

The Combat Patrol consists of the following 11 models:

  • 9x Von Ryan’s Leapers (broken out into 3 units)
  • 1x Lictor
  • 1x Neurolictor (known as Death’s Shadow)

This actually marks the second time that Games Workshop has released an official Combat Patrol that isn’t an existing box set. The previous was the Space Marine Combat Patrol known as Strike Team Solarien, which appeared in the pages of White Dwarf #496.

Notably if you purchase White Dwarf #497 you also get access to data sheets that comes along with the magazine. Games Workshop has also indicated that the new Combat Patrol will be made available on the official Warhammer 40K app and on WarCom in a few months time.

How much would it cost to purchase the Insidious Infiltrators?

If you wanted to build the Insidious Infiltrators out yourself, you’ll need to purchase nine Von Ryan’s Leapers. Since they’re sold in packages of three models, this would run you around $150 USD (if you purchased them all directly from Games Workshop). The Lictor would also run you around $50 USD (again, if purchased from Games Workshop) while the you’re looking at spending around $50 USD for the Neurolictor (which has since been sold out on the GW website).

So all told you’re looking at spending around $200 USD to build out this combat patrol (although you can likely get it for cheaper if you purchase online from Amazon or from other third-party retailers who tend have discounts on Games Workshop products).

How is this different than the Other Tyranid Combat Patrol?

Notably, the standard Tyranid Combat Patrol for 10th edition retails for $170 USD and comes with 32 models, including:

  • 1x Winged Tyranid Prime
  • 1x Psychophage
  • 3x Von Ryan’s Leapers
  • 5x Barbgaunts
  • 20x Termagants (armed with fleshborers)
  • 2x Ripper Swarms

So if you already have this box set Tyranid combat patrol you can at least repurpose your three Von Ryan’s Leapers for the Insidious Infiltrators. This also applies to the Leviathan box set, which includes three Von Ryan’s Leapers but does not have either the Lictor or Neurolictor.

Final Thoughts

It’s great to see Games Workshop continue to release new Combat Patrols in a format like White Dwarf. The only downside is that in the case of the Insidious Infiltrators they don’t really repurpose many models from either the existing Tyranid Combat Patrol box set or the Leviathan box set (in fact, even if you own both, you’ll still have to shell out for a Lictor and Neurolictor).

Still, it’s an encouraging sign that Games Workshop is continuing to support Combat Patrol as a game mode, particularly given its importance for bringing in new players (and potential Tyranid fans) into the game.
