Kill Team: Nightmare (Deep Dive)

It seems like the 2024 season of Warhammer 40K Kill Team has only just begun, but already we’ve seen some major new announcements from Games Workshop. The most recent was the release of the Kill Team: Salvation box set, which introduced the Aeldari Striking Scorpions and a new unit of Space Marine Scouts.

Now, GW has unveiled yet another new expansion in the form of Kill Team: Nightmare, an upcoming box set that includes two new forces: the Nemesis Claw warband of Night Lords Chaos Space Marines and a brand new coven of Drukhari Mandrakes. The box set is coming out on April 20th and is available from the Games Workshop website.

So just what nightmarish delights await players in this newest release? Below we take a look at what to expect.

What’s included in the Kill Team: Nightmare Box Set?

The new Nightmare box set is the second major Kill Team expansion for 2024 and was first announced at the annual Las Vegas Open game convention. Like the previous Kill Team: Salvation set, the action once again takes place on the desolate planet of Bheta-Decima, a forge world that’sbecome a toxic wasteland and holds the ruins of the legendary space hulk Gallowdark.

This box set includes:

  • 10 Nemesis Claw Night Lords Chaos Space Marines
  • 10 Drukhari Mandrakes
  • Generatorum Hub multi-level terrain piece
  • Datacards and token sheets for each team
  • An 96-page manual including lore and rules for both Kill Teams
  • One full size transfer sheet

Notably, the set also includes nine new missions that take advantage of the the terrain and includes additional rules for environmental hazards, including giant ocean predators and deadly whirlpools.

Who are the Nemesis Claw Night Lords?

The Night Lords are one of the most infamous of the Heretic Astartes, having once been the VIIIth Legion of Space Marines before being corrupted by the forces of Chaos and turning against the Emperor during the Horus Hersey.

Now, twisted into nightmarish beings, these Chaos Space Marines exist only to sow terror and death through the galaxy. Notably, they don’t worship any individual Chaos God but instead relish all of the dark powers of the Warp itself.

Their style of warfare is characterized by brutal force, a legacy of their Primarch Konrad Curze, a ruthless warrior known as the Night Haunter who was raised on the lawless, lightless world of Nostramo.

The Nemesis Claws are a unique kill team among the Night Lords who are known for draping themselves in the flayed skins of their victims. They also tend to operate in the shadows, prizing stealth as much as savagery and sporting vicious melee weapons, including lightning claws, Nostraman chainglaives and poisoned blades.

The kit included in the new Kill Team: Nightmare set, uses existing Chaos Space Marines as a base and features an extra-large upgrade sprue full of additional items, including draped skin, blades and winged helmets. The set also includes with the new Ventrilokar icon bearer, a sorcerous totem built from the ruined corpse of a murdered Space Marine that can mimic the voices of anyone whose flesh it consumes.

Who are the Drukhari Mandrakes?

Mandrakes are Drukhari who have been corrupted by the dark influence of a shadow dimension that has infected part of the realm of Commorragh.

Secretly feared even by other Drukhari, Mandrakes have the ability to literally move through shadow, striking with wicked glimmersteel blades and vanishing back into the darkness. They are also instantly recognizable due to the strange green fire which wreathes their bodies and the blasphemous ruins which mare their ebon skin.

Kill teams of Mandrakes are often enlisted by the Drukhari lords of Commorragh, but work primarily for their own twisted ends.

Within the new Kill Team: Nightmare box set, players will have access to a new Mandrake Shadeweaver, a fearsome assassin who can literally cut through the fabric of reality with the use of his shadowy powers.

When is the Kill Team: Nightmare release date?

The Kill Team Nightmare box set will be available for pre-order from the Games Workshop website with a release date of April 20th, 2024. As with other Games Workshop products, the release dates in your local game shop may vary. It will also likely be available from other online retailers shortly after the official launch date (currently there are no pre-orders available via Amazon).

How much is Kill Team Nightmare?

The new Kill Team: Nightmare box has a MSRP of $130 USD (£80.00). You can find out more on the official Games Workshop website.

As always, this price may vary if you pick it up from your friendly local game store or other online retailer, which typically knock 15 to 20% off GW’s standard price.

Final Thoughts

It’s amazing that Games Workshop has been continuing to support Kill Team, which remains a great entry level product for new players, while also allowing more experienced players to try their hand with new armies. It’s also great to see both the Night Lords and the Drukhari Mandrakes get their time to spotlight – even if it they are mostly in the shadows. You can order your copy now from the Games Workshop website.

We’ll continue to keep an eye on Kill Team: Nightmare and provide with more information as it’s made available. Below is also a video from Games Workshop with more details and a closer look at the new box set.
