New Kroot Hounds Models Unveiled

Longtime Warhammer 40K fans were recently surprised when Games Workshop announced the return of the Kroot, the legendary, flesh-eating xenos mercenaries. The upcoming Kroot Hunting Pack was first unveiled at the annual Las Vegas Open gaming tournament, followed by the announcement of the new convention-exclusive Kroot “Hunter Strikes” model.

Now, everyone’s favorite carnivorous lizard-bird warriors are getting even more love from GW, in the form of a new Kroot Hounds set that’s recently been unveiled for Warhammer 40K 10th edition.

So just what can fans expect to see from this predatory puppies? Below we break out all the details.

What Are the New Kroot Hounds?

According to Games Workshop, you’ll soon be able to purchase a set of five new Kroot Hounds, which are based on models originally featured in the Kill Team: Farstalker Kinband set. Notably, the Kill Team models have some slight cosmetic differences in that they have leather harnesses on which these new Kroot Hounds do not.

Within the lore of Warhammer 40K, Kroot Hounds are bad-tempered and vicious creatures that the Kroot use to run down their prey. Interestingly, the hounds are actually an evolutionary offshoot of the Kroot themselves, who absorb the genetic materials of their prey to shape their physiology. A series of spine-like ganglia that runs along their backs grants them incredible senses and they’re surprisingly difficult to kill given their size and lack of armor.

This actually isn’t the first time that Kroot Hounds have appeared in Warhamer 40K, with the beasts available for 9th edition as an auxiliary force for the T’au Empire.

What is the Datasheet for the Kroot Hounds?

While Games Workshop has not yet made the full Kroot Hounds datasheet available they have revealed a number of new abilities which showcases their speed and ferocity:

  • Loping Pounce: At the start of your Command phase, if this unit is within 6″ of one or more friendly Kroot Infantry units, then until the end of the turn, this unit is eligible to declare a charge in a turn which it Advanced.
  • Hunting Hounds: While this unit is within 12″ of one more more friendly Kroot Character models, the Objective Control characteristic of models in this unit is 1.

Games Workshop has not yet officially revealed the price for the new Kroot Hounds, but they will likely have an MSRP between $40-$50 USD, if you purchase him directly from the Games Workshop website. This is comparable to similar to units such as Gryphhounds, which retail for around $34 USD (although these models are several years old).

As always, prices may vary if you buy the model from your local game store or from Amazon (where discounts and sales may allow you to pick him up for a bit cheaper, with most third-party retailers offering at least 10-15% discounts).
