LEGO Warhammer 40K: Everything You Need to Know

Warhammer 40K and LEGO are two massive pop culture franchises that have a surprising amount in common. Both are made out of tiny plastic pieces, both are highly collectible and both have rabid global fans bases.

Not surprisingly, LEGO and Warhammer 40K enthusiasts have been waiting for years to see the two brands click. And it seems like it would be a natural fit, with Games Workshop’s grimdark universe featuring vehicles, figures and factions that are just begging to be turned into play sets. There’s also plenty of precedence, with LEGO having teamed with major geek-friendly franchises like Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and Dungeons & Dragons.

So just where do things currently stand with the possibility of a LEGO Warhammer 40K set? Below, we go brick by brick and break out everything we know so far.

Are There Official LEGO Warhammer 40K Sets?

As of January 2024, there are no official LEGO Warhammer 40K series. While neither brand has officially commented on why, one likely reason is that the LEGO tends to skew towards more family-friendly brands as opposed to the grimdark war-torn universe of Warhammer 40K. In fact, LEGO has a long standing policy of avoiding creating sets that glorify violence – although this has changed over the years and the company has clearly bent this rule when it comes to brands like Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, which feature plenty of violence and weaponry.

Another reason why a LEGO Warhammer 40K set has yet to materialize is that while Games Workshop’s flagship title has a significant appeal and fan base, it’s still a relatively niche brand when compared to global IPs from Marvel and Disney which have more mainstream appeal and the ability to generate larger amounts of revenue for LEGO.

Still, there are reasons to be optimistic about a potential LEGO Warhammer 40K set in the near future. To begin with, interest in Games Workshop has never been higher, with the company recently reporting record sales after the release of a new 10th edition of Warhammer 40K and a growing player base in the wake of the pandemic.

Similarly, the possible release of a new Amazon Warhammer 40K TV and film series starring Henry Cavill would likely introduce the IP into a much larger mainstream audience, at which point it may be more financially attractive to LEGO.

Are There Unofficial LEGO Warhammer 40K Sets?

In the absence of any official Warhammer 40K LEGO sets, fans have begun to create their own homemade versions, using existing sets and pieces. One method of doing this is via LEGO’s My Own Creation (MOC) system, which allows users to build and share their own designs (so long as it’s done purely for fun and isn’t monetized in any way). The website Rebrickable for example, features a number of fan-made Warhammer 40K LEGO designs, which users can download and make on their own.

There’s also a robust online community of individuals who are actively creating and modding Warhammer 40K designs using existing LEGO pieces. The company Warzone, for example, which designs gaming mats, dice and accessories, has constructed a variety of stunning Warhammer 40K LEGO mock ups using real world bricks.

Perhaps some of the best known examples of just what’s possible come from the artist known as Jerac, who over the past decade has created some incredible LEGO versions of Warhammer 40K minis, including Blood Angels and Orks. In fact, Jerac has even mocked up entire battlefields, complete with terrain and fully compatible units.

Similarly, the YouTuber Kos Brick has created some unbelievable designs based on existing Games Workshop units and also provides step-by-step instructions for how to recreate his various figures and vehicles using existing LEGO products.

You can also find plenty of inspiration on the LEGO fan website Brothers Brick, which has an entire section dedicated to Warhammer mods.

You can also find a ton of inspiration on Pinterest, with numerous users regularly submitting their own LEGO designs or collecting images from other users. All of these showcase just what is possible to dedicated modders, particularly those who are capable of using sophisticated design software like the official LEGO Digital Designer, which allows creators to build out complex models.

Finally, there are knock off products available for sale. The Chinese-based website Ali Express for example, has a variety of unlicensed Warhammer 40K LEGO mini figs and vehicles. Just bear in mind that while they are for sale, these these are NOT officially licensed from Games Workshop or LEGO and the quality may vary. They are also a blatant copyright infringement given that no royalties are paid to Games Workshop or LEGO.

How Can You Make Your Own LEGO Warhammer 40K Sets?

If you’re looking to create your own grim dark bricks, the website BitzStore has some fantastic examples, including instructions for how to create your very own LEGO Space Marine mini figures. You can also find a variety of tutorials on YouTube, Reddit and social media, with new fan-made content and designs coming out all the time.

Checking out creators on Rebrickable is also a great source for inspiration. There’s also an active LEGO modder community on Reddit, many of whom are happy to share tips, tricks and advice for how to create Warhammer 40K units from existing sets.

Final Thoughts

While currently there is no official Warhammer 40K LEGO products available, that doesn’t mean it’s not likely to happen in the future, given the growing popularity of the game in the wake of 10th edition and possible mainstream appeal following an upcoming Amazon film or TV series.

In the meantime, for fans of both plastic bricks and the war-torn 41st millennium, there’s plenty of options for creating your own sets using existing materials and sets, with a vibrant online community of likeminded modders ready to lend a hand.
