Warhammer 40K Artist John Blanche Gets New Biography
We take a closer look at the new book which celebrates Warhammer 40K artist John Blanche, creator of the legendary “Blanchitsu” art style.
Games Workshop has reported record retail sales and profits over the course of a single month, thanks in large part of the release of the Warhammer 40K 10th edition.
The news was announced in Games Workshop’s latest investor report, which was published on January 9th, 2024 and includes a breakdown of recent financial earnings in both the UK and North America.
The report notes that sales of the newest 10th edition of Warhammer 40k resulted in June 2023 setting a “new benchmark for sales in one month,” driving increased levels of revenue and returns for investors. Notably, the new edition of Games Workshop flagship title was released on June 24th, 2023, with GW publishing the rules for free online several weeks beforehand.
One key part of the success of 10th edition (and the record profits), was undoubtedly the Warhammer 40K Leviathan Box Set, which coincided with the release of the new edition of the game back in the summer of 2023. That particular box was highly sought after by existing fans, as well as introducing a number of new players to the game.
How Much Revenue Did Games Workshop Make?
According to the financial report, Games Workshop’s revenue for the period of June to November 2023 was $309 million USD. This is up from $283 million USD for the same period last year, representing a +9% growth in revenue.
Notably, sales to independent retailers made up almost 60% of that income, and it’s estimated that globally there are now around 7,000 independent retailers who carry Games Workshop products. This includes over 2,000 major retail outlets that stock what GW refers to as “key recruitment products”.
The report also notes that sales through Games Workshop’s own stores (which have been rebranded as “Warhammer Stores”) also saw sales increase by over 12%, with online sales rising almost 5%. This is definitely worth noting as GW is often blasted for selling its own products at higher costs than independent retailers and local game stores.
Interestingly, the report does note that income from licensing deals (such as toys, video games and collectibles like the recent Warhammer 40K statues from Weta), were down slightly. That being said, Games Workshop does indicate that this is likely to change given that they’ve since inked a deal with Amazon Studios to create Warhammer 40K films and TV series, with Henry Cavill set to star in and produce them.
Final Thoughts
While the recent announcement is no doubt good news for investors and Games Workshop executives, it’s also great news for fans, in that it shows the game is incredibly healthy and that we can likely expect bigger and better things ahead in 2024.
