While Warhammer 40K is a grim dark universe filled with bloodshed and betrayal, the real world community is the complete opposite, with hundreds of thousands of fans routinely coming together to celebrate a love of the games and lore that make up the Warhammer universe.
Of course, Games Workshop realizes just how important this fan base is, which is why they’ve also recently announced the return of Warhammer Heroes, a series of awards that are given to members of the community who have gone above and beyond to support the hobby.
So just what can we expect with this year’s Warhammer Heroes awards? Below, we break out all the details.
What is Warhammer Heroes?
The Warhammer Heroes award is an initiative from Games Workshop to recognize and honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the Warhammer community. This includes organizing events and tournaments, supporting new players, running influential social media channels or otherwise positively influencing the Warhammer hobby environment.
Recipients of Warhammer Heroes award are nominated by their peers online with the final selection made by Games Workshop. The winners receive a medal, a number of free GW products and are invited to attend in-person Warhammer Heroes Awards Evenings, which take place in various venues around the world. Winners’ names are also added to plaques which are hung on a “Wall of Honour” at the Bugman’s Bar pop-up at the Warhammer World convention.
Notably, the last Warhammer Heroes Awards were held in 2020, after which they were put on hiatus largely due to the pandemic. 2024 will mark their first return in four years and Games Workshop has indicated that they will likely be an annual event going forward.
Who were Past Winners of the Warhammer Heroes?
Past winners can be found on a “Roll of Honour” page that Games Workshop maintains. This includes individuals such as:
- Gayle Price: Chief administrator of the largest Warhammer 40K fan group on Facebook.
- Andrew Weller: A member of the British armed forces who served in Afghanistan andwho has organized a number of Warhammer 40K events to raise money for charity and connect with other veterans.
- Ben Curry: Founder of the Bad Dice Podcast and creator of the influential Age of Sigmar online community known as The Grand Alliance.
- Jeremy Srofe: The Oregon-based creator of a Warhammer food donation tournament to benefit low-income school children, aptly named Food for the Blood God.
How do you nominate Someone As a Warhammer Hero?
You can nominate an individual through the submission form on the Games Workshop website. Just bear in mind that there are a number of terms and conditions which you’ll have to meet (the biggest being that the winner will have to travel to attend the award ceremony at their own expense). The final deadline to nominate someone is January 31st, 2024.
When will the Warhammer Heroes winners be announced?
The award winners will be announced in March, likely at AdeptiCon which is being held from March 20th – 24th in Schaumburg, Illinois.
The actual Warhammer Heroes Awards Evenings will likely be held in the following months in various locations around the world in order to accommodate international winners.
