Since the launch of the 10th edition of Warhammer 40K last year, Games Workshop has been putting more of an emphasis on the Combat Patrol game mode. This includes recently releasing a brand new Dark Angels Combat Patrol and also adding new rules and unit compositions in White Dwarf magazine.
This Combat Patrol trend continues inWhite Dwarf issue #498, which features details and datasheets for a brand new Rogue Trader Combat Patrol known as VanTarrion’s Voidsmen.
So how does this new unit of Imperial profiteers stack up against existing Combat Patrols? Below, we break out all the details.
What is the VanTarrion’s Voidsmen Rogue Trader Combat Patrol?
According to White Dwarf #498, the new Rogue Trader Combat patrol consists of the following models, all of which comes from existing Kill Team sets.
- 10x Imperial Navy Breachers
- x9 Elucidian Starstriders (including Eidelwynne VanTarrion)
- x1 Canid
This actually marks the third time that Games Workshop has released rules for an official Combat Patrol that isn’t related to an existing box set. The first was the Space Marine Combat Patrol known as Strike Team Solarien, which appeared in the pages of White Dwarf #496. This was followed by a Tyranid Combat Patrol, known as the Insidious Infiltrators, in White Dwarf #497. It’s also the first time that any Rogue Trader unit has appeared in Combat Patrol.
Notably if you purchase White Dwarf #498 you also get access to complete datasheets for the new Rogue Trader Combat Patrol along with new rules for a 3 to 4 player mode. Games Workshop has also indicated that VanTarrion’s Voidsmen will likely be made available on the official Warhammer 40K app and on WarCom in a few months time.
How much would it cost to purchase VanTarrion’s Voidsmen?
If you wanted to build the new Rogue Trader Combat Patrol out yourself, you’ll need to purchase the Kill Team: Imperial Navy Breachers, which retails for $60 USD on the Games Workshop website. Notably, this includes a Gheistskull and C.A.T. Unit which are not part of the Combat Patrol.
Additionally, you’ll need to purchase the Kill Team: Elucidian Starstriders, which also retails for $60 USD on the Games Workshop website.
So all told you’re looking at spending around $120 USD to build out this combat patrol, which is actually a pretty decent price point considering how much other patrols are going for (in fact, you can likely get it for cheaper if you purchase online from Amazon or from other third-party retailers who tend have discounts on Games Workshop products).
Who is Eidelwynne VanTarrion?
Eidelwynne VanTarrion is the leader of VanTarrion’s Voidsmen and a new character within the lore of the Warhammer 40K universe. For this reason, little is known about her other than the fact that she is a Captain and Rogue Trader.
What we do know is that she is based on the existing character/model of Elucia Vhane, a ruthless Imperial privateer known for her distinctive veiled appearance, feathered hat and hard-bitten crew. More details about Eidelwynne VanTarrion will likely revealed in the coming days (particularly if her Combat Patrol becomes popular among Warhammer 40K fans).
Final Thoughts
It’s great to see Games Workshop continue to promote Combat Patrol as a game mode, as it’s a fantastic entry point for new players and a solid game mode for veterans looking for a quicker match and less investment for a new force.
It also makes sense that Games Workshop would focus on creating a Rogue Trader Combat Patrol given the popularity of the recent Rogue Trader video game, which itself may serve as an entry point for new fans looking to get into Warhammer 40K. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this story in the days ahead and update this page with more information as it’s made available.
